another day in sf

There is something about this city that never fails to draw me in. When I spent a semester here last fall, it became exactly what I needed at that moment in my life, grounding, restorative, and quietly inspiring. There is so much to take in, yet it invites you gently, with the kind of calm affection. Autumn has always been my favorite season, and in the Bay Area it reveals itself with particular beauty. The light filters through in a golden haze, the cool air with cloudy skies, and the pace of the city slows just enough to notice its subtleties. Beyond San Francisco itself, I enjoyed the calm energy of Marin and the understated charm of Walnut Creek, each offering its own kind of escape.

My Perfect Day

I like to wake just before sunrise because it makes me feel as though I am waking with the earth itself. The Marina is my favorite place to stay, its close to some of my favorites. At that hour, the streets feel suspended in stillness, though you sense others are quietly beginning their day alongside you. A walk to Crissy Field or a run along the path toward the Golden Gate offers the perfect solitude for clearing your head.

Afterward comes coffee, a simple ritual that feels grounding in its own way. Rose Cafe is a favorite. I found this spot when flying to France and had a layover at SFO. Then I return to prepare for the day and head to brunch, something light, refreshing, and unhurried.

The afternoon belongs to art. SFMOMA and the de Young remain favorites in every season. Moving through their galleries feels like a meditation, a retreat into thought and observation. I listen to a podcast, or play music.

Later, I love to pop in to the shops along Fillmore, Chestnut, or Union. There is always something to discover.

The day closes at South Beach, where the sunset stretches across the water in shifting colors. I like to sit and read there, or simply be with friends. After the cool air of a fall day, dinner is always something comforting, dumplings or ramen.
